Dog Gone Good ~ Instructor Russ

Russ Strumskas

Owner / Head Instructor

At the age of two, Russ told his parents he was going to be a Veterinarian, since that day his plans have changed but he hasn't stopped working with animals. He grew up surrounded by all types of animals including hamsters, guinea pigs, cats, dogs, cows, horses, and pigs. He first showed interest in dog training at age six when he helped train his family dog with basic commands like "sit", "stay", "down", and "give paw".

Later in life, he found a true passion for obedience training when he was finally able to have a dog of his own and began formal obedience training classes. He observed how body language, tone of voice, consistency, and patience effected each individual dog's learning, behavior, and attitude. After seeing this effect and realizing that every dog is different, he continued to train his own dog along with family and friend's dogs, trying to find the most efficient way to accomplish any training goal he set forth.

After finishing a mentoring program with a professional trainer, Russ has completed his Professional Dog Trainers Certification and continues to expand his knowledge in canine behavioral problem solving using Positive reinforcement by attending seminars and classes. He has had many unique opportunities to discuss training techniques with a variety of trainers, such as police, military, and even circus trainers. Through school, he has been trained in various animal sciences such as canine nutrition, animal restraint, grooming, pet care, administration of vaccines, and small animal breeding and he uses this training to help his students handle different situations that they may encounter.

Russ' two loyal assistants are Tanner and Emmitt. Tanner is a yellow lab with a rare red-fox coloring. Tanner is always eager to please and has proven to be an exceptional student as well as an assistant to Russ in class. He has completed and passed Puppy Kindergarten, K9 Elementary, K9 High School, K9 Sports, K9 College, and K9 Grad School with flying colors. Tanner passed the Canine Good Citizen certification and continues to expand his obedience training by taking additional classes.

Following close behind in Tanner's footsteps is Emmitt, Tanner's younger "brother". At 9 weeks old this chocolate lab mastered the "sit", "down", and "stay' commands with excellent focus. Now that he's an adult he challenges himself to compete with his older brother. After passing Puppy Kindergarten, K9 Elementary, K9 High School, and K9 Sports without flinching, he enthusiastically continued his training in K9 College and obtained his Canine Good Citizen certification. Emmitt's next challenge is K9 Grad School where he plans to master his off leash training.

Like most Labs both Tanner and Emmitt love people and will be the first to greet you when you walk into class. Just watch out for those Lab kisses.

Russ cannot emphasize how important your involvement is with the training of your dog. He always looks for ways to involve his own dogs in everything he does from camping trips in Vermont , walks in the park, or field trips to the local pet store. He looks forward to advancing his career in dog training and meeting you and your four legged companion in Class!
