I Ride for Tanner and K9 Kidney Disease Awareness 2010

70 Mile Excursion: What a ride! I felt amazing the entire trip. Not only was this my longest ride EVER but also my strangest. First, The weather was weird, I left my house at 6:00am and it was 58 clear and the sun just coming up. 12 Miles in and it got cloudy (Scary cloudy) and the temp jump to 63 and got humid and then there was a quick sprinkle that lasted only 3 seconds and it was gone. Then about half way, 35 miles, the clouds cleared up and it was 60 degrees, the temp climbed steadily the rest of the trip and the sun was in an out but as I rode I went through pockets of freezing cold air and then thick and humid air. Weird part was this all kept happening a matter a minutes from each other on the same roads and with the same conditions.

Then to add to this strange weather, the dogs were out to get me. I've been riding consistently since March and have yet to be chased by any animals and today 3 dogs tried to eat me. One almost got me too. The Rottweiler scared me the most because he just looked mean. The little ankle bitter just made me jump because he came out of no where and then the border collier almost bit my back tire. It's amazing how fast you can go when you need to....

Then if that wasn't enough, my friend the deer decided he wanted to race me again on the side of the road. Normally, I'm use to this, but this time he decided to cut me off and take off across the street instead of just running into the woods like normal.

Even with all the craziness, this was my best ride yet.

August 4, 2010:

FLOP! I ate dinner first, BIG mistake. I cramped up so bad I called it quits only half way into the ride. So with that said, 10 short miles is complete and I learned my lesson for next time.

August 3, 2010:

Long day at work, followed by a short bike ride to loosen up the legs and stay on track. So I'm off on a 11 mile quick spin. Let's see how I feel............

So that was an awesome ride. One of my fastest with 17.5 mile per hour average speed and it only took 38 minutes to complete burning a total of 556 calories. My legs felt great and my breating was completely under control. What a way to cap off a stressful day with a de-stressing workout.

Dinner time and then rest for the evening. See ya tomorrow.

August 1, 2010:

My training started well over 3 months ago but now it's crunch time and I also figured this would be a great way to track my experience.

So, with a little less then a month before my first ever Century bike ride I'm fealing pretty good. It's 4:30 in the morning on a foggy Sunday and I'm letting my breakfast digest and preparing for yet another long traing ride. Today I've mapped out a 60 Mile route through all the surounding towns here in eastern CT. It should be about a 4 hour ride with 1 or 2 stops to re-fuel.

I'm a little anexous about today's ride only because I pulled a tendon in my knee last week on a similar ride. It took me a full week to nurse it back to health. But, there's no giving up so here I go.........

Well, I'm back from the ride and it was pretty good. I made decent time and my knee was fine the whole trip. I think I finally found the right combination of energy supplements to keep me going but I still have a few more things to try. Plus I burned 3755 calories in 3 hours and 46 minutes, basically that means I need to eat everything twice today to survive :-)

Now it's time to eat a big healthy lunch and rest for a few.

July 31, 2010:

Dear Friends and Family,

As many of you may already know, I am dog owner, advocate, and am involved in many fundraisers for different types of animal organizations. I'm also a huge cycling enthusiast and ride my bike for both fun and exercise.

This year I've challenged myself to ride my first Century (100 Miles) at the end of August. I'm actually planning to ride about 112 miles with a group of other cyclist. Our ride will take us through multiple towns in Connecticut. We'll be starting in Hebron and working our way down to Mystic then following the shoreline until we reach Clinton where we will head northwest to Durham to finish our ride. Initially, my goal was just to complete the 100 miles, but thinking about it, I thought that it would be great to do this for a bigger reason.

I wanted to ride for a reason close to my heart and for something that doesn't have a lot of exposure. So this is where my love for animals (Dogs) came into play.

Nine years ago I had the opportunity to own my first dog. After a lot of indecision on if I could actually keep a dog, my mind was made up and my first dog, Tanner, came into my life. Long story short, Tanner ended up being the best thing that could have ever happened to me and he also ended up being the smartest most loyal and well-behaved dog you could ever ask for. Unfortunately, in October of 2008, his life was cut short by Kidney Disease. A well known “human” disease but when it comes to animals, there are very few Veterinarians who know how to treat it.

Most people have heard of Kidney Disease and know that it is an incurable disease that will end in death if left untreated. In today's society, there are different medical treatments that can help a person maintain the disease and live a somewhat normal life. But in animals, particularly dogs, the prognosis is a grimmer, or so I was told. Tanner's situation allowed me to do extensive research on the Disease, and I learned that there are a lot of different options for dogs. I questioned multiple veterinarians and most knew little or nothing of the different options other than the one treatment they learned in medical school.

So on August 28 th 2010 (horrible weather date, September 4 th 2010) I will be riding 112 miles in memory of Tanner and more importantly for AWARENESS of a disease that can, in many cases, with the correct knowledge be treated. I will also be wearing a green bracelet to help spread Awareness and hopefully help prevent at least one un-timely death.

This email is meant to help spread Kidney Disease Awareness, but as with any Awareness campaign, there are organizations that need donations to continue to spread the word. After all my research, I found one organization that continually has ongoing research and training on Canine Kidney Disease. For my ride, I have selected The Cumming School of Veterinary Medicine Research Department at Tufts ( http://www.tufts.edu/vet/ ). All sponsorships and donations will go to the Kidney Disease research department at the school in memory of Tanner and in hopes to prevent similar situations for others.

So as I said, this is all for awareness, and my K9 K idney D isease A wareness R ide will be successful if just one person becomes more informed, but if you would like to make a donation, cash is always welcomed, just send me an email and I'll make all the arrangements, but you can also make an electronic donation through Paypal (you don't need a Paypal account).

I thank you for your time and consideration and look forward to whatever support you can provide, monetary or moral. Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have and please feel free to pass this on to help spread the awareness.

Thank you for your support.
